On May 18, 2019, the Sanitation Districts gave a tour of the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP) to fifty-four Clearwater Project stakeholders. Guests learned about wastewater treatment and how we convert waste into resources. Guests also visited the adjacent Bixby Marshland, which is maintained by the Sanitation Districts. This fall, the Sanitation Districts will begin outreach to schools near the tunnel alignment. This program will provide students the opportunity to learn about the science and technology of wastewater treatment, environmental stewardship through water recycling, and the engineering used to build critical infrastructure. Our hope is to inspire careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). We will offer in-classroom presentations, bus tours of our wastewater treatment facility in Carson, and visits to a cutting-edge water purification facility. The south end of the JWPCP property is being prepared for the construction of a tunnel access shaft. The tunnel boring machine (TBM) will be lowered through this shaft to its starting depth. The shaft will serve as the entry/exit point for construction workers, tunnel materials (e.g., prefabricated tunnel wall sections), equipment, and excavated soil. The contractor, Dragados USA, has started site grading and has completed underground utility checks. A separate project to provide power for an electrically-driven TBM is also underway.
