• School Outreach Program

Our Goal

The Clearwater Project School Outreach Program is designed to provide students the opportunity to learn about the science and technology of wastewater (sewage) treatment, environmental stewardship through water recycling, and the engineering used to build critical infrastructure.  With this program, Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts hope to inspire careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) by offering in-person and virtual presentations on environmental stewardship, water recycling and the engineering used to build critical infrastructure like the Clearwater Project tunnel. In-person and virtual tours of our wastewater (sewage) treatment plants, landfills and recycling facilities are also available upon request.

“OLIVIA’S CLEAN WATER ADVENTURE”

In-Person or Virtual Presentation

See through the eyes of Olivia the Otter as she encourages environmental stewardship and promotes ways to keep our waterways clean. This presentation is offered to elementary schools in Carson, Harbor City, Rancho Palos Verdes, San Pedro, and Wilmington. This presentation is geared for grades 4 and 5.

In-Classroom & Assembly Presentation

HOW WE BUILD MODERN TUNNELS

Our team can visit your classroom or assembly to explore how wastewater is collected from homes and businesses, cleaned through a state-of-the-art treatment process, and transformed into recycled water that is essentially as clean as drinking water. Students can also learn how the Clearwater Project tunnel is being built using a modern tunnel boring machine.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS

In-Person or Virtual Tour

Learn step-by-step how wastewater (sewage) is converted into water that is essentially as clean as drinking water. Under this program, the school provides the bus and the Sanitation Districts provide a tour guide. The Sanitation Districts will reimburse the school for one bus tour per year.

Sanitation Districts staff will share what it is like to have a career in technical field that helps protect our environment and convert waste in resources.

Career Day Visits

In-Person or Virtual Visits

Interview with an Engineer

Virtual Interview

The Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts offer this virtual meeting to learn about the Clearwater Project and what engineers do.

The presentation is 10 minutes long followed by a question-and-answer period of up to 20 minutes. These meetings require a minimum of at least 5 attendees.
